The Secular Buddhist View
Following the death of The Buddha, the majority of dates and historical events are undisputed.
The exceptions are claims of miraculous or supernatural events such as Nagarjuna’s travel to the underwater world of the nagas, the magic of Milarepa or the levitation of Shantideva as well as countless lesser stories from across all Buddhist cultures which are clearly folk tales or local legends. These are collectively considered as Buddhist mythology and to be outside of the historical record.
