Traditional Buddhist Practices vs. Secular Buddhist Practices

Depending on the particular branch of Buddhism, the following practices may be followed. The yes/no/optional tags indicate whether Secular Buddhism incorporates these practices.

• Meditation – yes including:

• insight meditation

• concentration meditation including breath and other objects
(also loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity)

• walking meditation – can be either concentration or insight

• Study of classical teachings – yes although normally in modern versions

• Dana – optional

• Vegetarianism – optional

• Statues of The Buddha – optional

• Singing Bowls - optional

• Bowing as formal greeting - optional

• Incense - optional

• Chanting - no

• Ordination - no

• Dharma names - no

• Prostrations – no

• Diety visualization - no

• Mantras - no

• Mandala  visualizations - no

• Koans - no

• Mudras – no
